Edge Energy® brings EV fast charging to remote locations—without grid expansion

Cumulocity empowers Edge Energy to power EV fast charging—anywhere.

Customer

Edge Energy® is a pioneer in EV charging infrastructure, focused on solving one of the biggest challenges in the electrification of transportation: delivering fast, reliable Level-3 charging to areas without access to traditional three-phase power. Their patent pending, Digital Phase Conversion Power Source unlocks high-speed EV charging using only a single-phase input—enabling both individual and fleet charging for commercial, residential, and industrial users in even the most remote environments.
Edge Energy

Challenges

  • Infrastructure limitations: High-speed EV charging requires three-phase power, but in rural and many industrial areas this is often unavailable, and three-phase grid expansion can cost up to and over $400,000 per mile.
  • Operational viability: Manual readings or on-site diagnostics are logistically and financially unworkable, recognizing the remote nature of many locations
  • Need for scalability: Devices need to report real-time usage and performance data from remote or under-served locations reliably, allowing the capability for pro-active and pre-emptive intervention, if necessary
  • Product agility: Remote access is essential to enable feature deployment, updates, and diagnostics at scale, while simultaneously ensuring a customer-delighting service proposition

Outcomes

  • Twice as fast to market: By building on Cumulocity, Edge Energy launched in half the time as compared to constructing an internally defined, custom cloud solution with an associated customer-facing, secure, browser-based dashboard.
  • Cost-effective scale: Edge Energy® achieved enterprise-grade capabilities, featuring industry-leading security, at a fraction of the cost of an in-house stack and customized cloud solution.
  • Multi-unit visibility: The centralized dashboard architecture allows customers the ability to visualize their full deployment and monitor devices both collectively and individually, while supporting expanded analytic exploration for data specifically tied to singular units.
  • Future-ready foundation: The feature-rich Cumulocity platform builds the baseline for upcoming AI-driven enhancements and predictive capabilities, future proofing the system as the Edge Energy® technology and business proposition expands.
Cumulocity has helped us move quickly and build a powerful customer-facing analytics platform. The flexibility of the platform has been key to the velocity of our initial deployments—and positions us well to realize upcoming AI enhancements as our markets scale.

Details

Edge Energy developed an EV industry-first Digital Phase Conversion Power Source that makes high-speed EV charging viable in locations with only single-phase power. Launching the product at scale required a robust, secure, and remotely manageable IoT platform.

IoT buyer's guide

“How do I choose the IoT solution that’s right for me?”

The IoT buyer’s guide covers what makes an IoT project succeed, what capabilities a survey of enterprise IoT projects revealed were critical, and advice on what to look for when considering an IoT platform.

The company needed more than just device connectivity—it required full visibility, modular control, and a scalable architecture that could grow with demand. Building such a system from scratch could delay initial deployments and divert critical resources from the business’s core innovation proposition.

As Edge Energy® evaluated platforms, the engineering team identified key requirements for success:

  • Remote device visibility: Full analytics oversite over each Power Source, even in intermittently connected environments.
  • Data collection & aggregation: Real-time data ingestion from devices, aggregated, and, in some cases, analytically modified in the cloud for performance and operational insights.
  • Browser-based dashboards: Role-specific interfaces for engineering, customer support, and end users.
  • Security & compliance: Support for auditing and the implementation of industry-standard security data protocols and API’s.
  • Modular, scalable architecture: A secure and efficient cloud-native platform to support future growth and service delivery.
  • AI readiness: A flexible foundation to support upcoming Edge Energy AI integrations and enhancements.
